The provinces of Iğdır, Kars, Ağrı and Ardahan, where we carry out our work, are on intercontinental bird migration routes. The wetlands it harbors provide many species of birds with the opportunity to feed, rest and protect themselves during their migration journeys, and are also breeding grounds for some species. Bird ringing and tracking with transmitters can identify the migration routes of birds and the important natural areas where they stay, and as a result of the study, information on internationally important areas that need to be protected is obtained.
White Stork Ringing Project
White Stork
The second of the project of Iğdır’s storks ringing in the nest was carried in 2022 with cooperation between KuzeyDoğa Society, Eskişehir Metropolitan Municapility and Iğdır University Ornithology Center and with support of Aras Electricity Distribution company. In the scope of the Project, 150 stork chick were ringed and 5 stork were tracked with transmitters.
The nests in the field were located through approximately 120 hours field work and spotted in the nests the proper size stork chicks to be ringed.
With the help of the crane, the expert ringer and veterinarian were able to reach the nests and the stork chicks were ringed.
The aim of this study was to determine the number of storks breeding in the Iğdır region, their habitats, nest success, offspring success, migration routes and to prevent their deaths due to electric shock.
The fact that storks in the region prefer electric poles as nesting places puts them at risk of death due to electric shock. To prevent this situation, the electrical wires around the nest were covered with insulation material by Aras electricity distribution company during the work.
